Plastics have a wide operating temperature range. Thermoplastics melt above their maximum operating temperature and can dissolve, exhibiting minimal swelling. The choice of polymer determines its chemical and morphological structure, which in turn influences chemical compatibility and mechanical properties (ductility, stiffness, and strength). Semi-crystalline molecular structures cannot recover after excessive stretching and are susceptible to partial deformation after molding. Engineering plastics are often used as retaining rings, guide rings, bushings, oil scrapers, or other components of sealing assemblies.
